Town v Norwich - Warnock v Wagner - Lord Snooty - 22-08-2023 Huddersfield Town v Norwich City
The Sky Bet Championship Saturday August 26th - 15:00 ko at the Town Ground Neil Warnock welcomes David Wagner to the John McAlpharm Stadium on Saturday afternoon for the latest episode of Friends Reunited. This one hopefully will be titled "The One Where Town Win Easliy". However, this will not be a walk in the park. Wagz has improved his Norwich team in the summer, after a poor finish to last season saw them drop out of the Play Off positions. He's brought in plenty of experience in the shape of Shane Duffy, the ex Brighton defender and Ashley Barnes from Burnley, who always scores against us. He also went back to his old club in Switzerland, the Young Boys of Berne and paid them three million for right winger Christian Fassnacht. Add to that the emergence of 20 year old Jonathan Rowe on the other wing, who has scored four goals already this season, they have a squad that should be pushing for the automatic promotion places. Teemu Pukki though, has said goodbye to Carrow Road and gone to Denmark to play for Brondby. Another new Canary came from us in the summer. The ever popular, smiling face of Narcís Pèlach went down there to assist with coaching, alongside another former Town coach, Andrew Hughes, who was at Town with Wagner in those good old days from not so long ago. They've also taken on our former goalkeeping coach, Paul Clements and of course Wagner's best buddy, no not Klopp, Christoph Bühler is there as well. Who's been appointing all these coaches? Not that Delia. Let's be 'avin' yer. It's ex Town sporting director Stuart Webber, the man who brought Wagz to the Town in the first place. Unlike Town, who gained their first point of the season at Middlesbrough on Saturday, Norwich have an almost perfect start. They would've won all four of their games so far had it not been for a very dodgy, injury time penalty for Southampton. They drew down at St Mary's 4-4, after leading three times during the match. That came after a 2-1 win at home to Hull on the opening day and before winning at home to Millwall on Sunday, they also had a Carabooboo win with a late 1-0 winner at QPR. This though, will be their hardest game of the season so far. As you'll see from the next section, Warnock has had the wool over Wagner's eyes on many occasions and he's gonna do it again. Tickets: Adults - £25 65s and over - £20 18s and under - £15 under 11s - £10 Head to Head Warnock leads the head to head with 2 wins to Wagner's 0, with 4 draws. Game 1 - Apr 19, 2016; Rotherham 1-1 Town: Town had appointed the German born USA international, David Wagner in the previous November. While over at the New York Stadium, the Millers appointed Neil Warnock in February, taking over from Neil Redfearn with the team favourites for relegation. Having only taken a single point from their first three matches, Warnock steadied the ship and by the time Wagner took his Town team there, both teams were just about safe. Town were safe actually, having won at Blackburn at the weekend. This point for the Millers sealed their safety, barring a 12 goal turnaround by MK Dons, which didn't happen. Warnock stated at the time that keeping Rotherham up was his greatest achievement in football. He has since of course, updated that. The match itself was a 1-1 draw, with both goals coming in the first half. Greg Halford scored first for the home team, from a poorly cleared corner, shooting past Jed Steer. Nahki Wells equalised though twelve minutes later, cutting inside from the left hand side and shooting hard and low past Lee Camp. A crowd of 10,292 turned up to see Warnock manage his team against the club he got promoted in 1995 and his side included ex Town player Danny Ward, at centre forward. Wagner's team lined up as follows; Steer, Smith, Hudson, Lynch, Davidson, Whitehead, Billing, Lolley (Scannell), Bunn (Paterson), van La Parra (Matmour), Wells. Unused subs; Cranie, Huws, Dempsey, Allinson. Game 2 - Nov 19, 2016; Cardiff 3-2 Town Despite keeping Rotherham up and stating that he would've liked to stay on, they didn't offer him another 12 months, preferring to give the job to Alan Stubbs. That didn't go well and he'd been sacked by the time Warnock, now a sprightly 67 year old, came out of retirement to take on the job at Cardiff City. One of the first games of his Welsh adventure was the visit of one of his former teams, Huddersfield Town. David Wagner had made a fantastic start to the season with Town, but by now, the wheels were not so much coming off, but starting to wobble a bit, following a 5-0 defeat at Fulham and a drab draw at Birmingham. The wheels were certainly looking a bit more wobbly after this one, where Warnock very much got the better of Wagner. Quote: Cardiff raced into a two goal lead through ex Town player Sean Morrison and then Junior Hoillett. Tommy Smith pulled one back before half time. Rickie Lambert made it 3-1 and then Phillip Billing scored to make it 3-2 near the end as Town slipped to 4th in the table, behind Reading. Warnock's boys stayed just above the relegation zone. Rotherham meanwhile, were rock bottom. Town had 71% of the posession, but as we've seen since Neil's return to the McAlpine, you don't need tons of possession to win a football match. Game 3 - May 7, 2017 Town 0-3 Cardiff: By the time the two teams met again, it was the last game of the season. Warnock had got his team well safe in 13th, whereas Rotherham were relegated weeks earlier. Great decision by the Millers directors there. Town however, had gone and made the Play Offs, clinching that place in the end of season lottery with a goal from Izzy Brown against Wolves at Molineux. That proved to be our last goal of the season actually scored by a Town player. We followed that with a 2-0 defeat at Birmingham and then this 3-0 loss to Warnock's Welsh Wonders. And the only goal we scored in the Play Offs came from an own goal by Tom Lees of Sheffield Wednesday. David Wagner, of course, did get us promoted, matching the feat of Neil Warnock in 1995, by winning at Wembley. But this game was another triumph for the by now 68 year old Warnock. Quote: Having rested a load of players controversially, against Birmingham, Wagner picked his best available team for this one, with just Elias Kachunga and Nahki Wells missing from the team that would start at Wembley in a few weeks time. The last thing Wagz wanted when they went out there was for anyone to get injured or perish the thought, sent off and suspended. So with nothing at stake, Town started slowly and Cardiff took the lead after 7 minutes through Kenneth Zohore. Never mind, nothing to worry about here. But then in the 20th minute, Cardiff hit us on the break again, a classic Warnock move. Danny Ward came rushing out of his area and handled the ball, got sent off and would be suspended for the first leg of the Play Offs. His replacement, Joel Coleman, was soon picking the ball out of his net as Joe Bennett made it 2-0. The same player made it three in the 71st minute and Warnock had done one over Wagner again. Game 4 - Aug 25, 2018 Town 0-0 Cardiff: So Wagner took Town into the Premier League and we had a fantastic time of it in 2017/18. Warnock got Cardiff promoted as runners up to Wolves and so the two managers met for the first time as members of the so called elite, in the Premier League. Town had started off with defeats to Chelsea and Manchester City, so when Warnock brought his team to the John Smith's in the third game of the season, hopes were high of getting the season well and truly underway with a walloping win. We were bossing the game, but then after the hour mark, yond prick Harry Arter got Jonathan Hogg sent off by that other prick, Michael Oliver, for an alleged head butt. Warnock's men came more into the game and Sean Morrison should've won it for him, but headed wide when it was harder to miss. Then sub Laurent Depoitre could've won it for us in the last minute but was denied by a last ditch tackle from Sol Bamba. Warnock had Danny Ward on the bench and he came on to replace Zohore just before the red card incident. Another reason why Cardiff had won promotion in the previous season. Warnock loves him. Town's Terence Kongolo won the Man of The Match award. Whatever happened to him? Quote: Game 5 - Jan 12, 2019 Cardiff 0-0 Town: The fifth match in the Wagner/Warnock Head to Head was the final game of the Wagner Revolution at Huddersfield Town. He resigned the day after following a month of disgraceful refereeing decisions that had robbed us of points throughout December and the first half of the season. This game at Cardiff just threw the tin hat on it all. With 14 minutes to go in another goal less encounter, Joe Bennett brought down Florent Hadergjonaj and referee Lee Mason pointed to the spot. However, the linesman had other ideas and for the once in a lifetime occasion, he actually spoke up and told the ref he'd got it wrong. To be fair, Warnock's lot had two stonewallers turned down, one for hand ball by Erik Durm and another when Flo brought down Junior Hoilett. Old Colin would've gone ballistic if we'd won it with that controversial penalty. It definitely was one though. Don't care what he says. Penaly decisions apart, Wagner's boys bossed the game with 14 shots to their three, but it was one point apiece and Wagz still hadn't got a win over the old lad. Wagner's last selection as manager in front of a crowd of 30,725 was as follows; Lössl, Hadergjonaj, M Jorgensen, Schindler, Durm, Puncheon, Hogg, Billing, Kachunga, Pritchard (Mbenza), Mounie (Depoitre). Unused subs: Smith, Kongolo, Hamer, Löwe, Stankovic. Game 6 - Mar 15, 2023 Town 1-1 Norwich: And so Wagner was gone. Warnock went down to the Championship with the Bluebirds, but left in November 2019. Wagz went to Schalke and then Young Boys in Switzerland. Warnock had a spell up at Middlesbrough. Town struggled after Wagner left, a club in turmoil, despite the Wembley appearance under the leadership of Carlos Corberan. After he left, things got really bad. In the early stages of last season, whilst Danny Schofield was the Head Coach, both Wagner and Warnock came to consecutive home games as guests of the club, both of them doing the half time draw and the reception both were given was amazing. When Schoey was moved on, we were sure that Wagz could be talked into coming back. He was out of work and this was the most natural thing for him to return. He had hinted as such when he made that leaving video. But no. We took on some dummy from Dundee instead. The club was in a terrible condition by February when Mark Fotheringham was finally dismissed. Neil Warnock, as we all know came out of retirement to save us from relegation. Wagner meanwhile had taken the job at Norwich, starting off with a 4-0 win at Preston. By the time this game came around, they had dropped out of the top 6 though. Huddersfield Town were doomed. Well adrift of safety. The Warnock magic was missing. We'd been stuffed by Coventry and Burnley and had lost at West Brom at the weekend when Wagner and his Canaries polled up at the JSS for a Wednesday night game. Things were looking so bleak that me and Amelia couldn't be arsed turning up for this one. Even the return of King Wagner couldn't change our minds. And it was his team that went in 1-0 up at half time as Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Sara scored following a slick attacking move involving Kenny MacLean and Adam Idah. But the half time team talk from Warnock proved to be the turning point of the season. Whether it was a paint stripping, tea cup throwing, bleep bleep bleeping rant of the old days or a calm, soothing encouragement talk, we may never know, but whatever happened, the lads came out a different looking team, playing with more determination. Town, playing in the Yorkshire Air Ambulance kit, never had a shot on target, but we did get an equaliser. It was Josh Koroma, a revelation once again, winning the ball in midfield and laying it off to Martyn Waghorn, who chipped the ball over the out of position keeper, Angus Gunn. The ball looked to be going in, but hit the post before going in off the scrambling Norwich captain, Grant Hanley. Who needs shots on target?! They missed the Play Offs and we avoided the drop, so here we go again for Warnock v Wagner Game 7. Warnock's line up for this match won't be too far off the team that will start this game either: Vaclík, Edmonds-Green, Lees, Helik, Ruffels, Koroma (Kasumu), Hogg, Rudoni, Jackson, Waghorn (Simpson), Ward (Diarra). Unused subs; Pearson, Rhodes, Hungbo, Bilokapic. Wagner's selection for Sunday's home game with Millwall: 28 Angus Gunn - Bryan's lad, Norwich born Scottish international. 3 Jack Stacey - Right back signed from Bournemouth. 24 Shane Duffy - Irish international, ex Brighton centre back. 6 Ben Gibson - Ex Boro centre back. 30 Dimitrios Giannoulis - Greece international left back. 17 Gabriel Gomes Sara - 24 year old Brazilian attacking midfielder. 23 Kenny McLean - Scottish international midfielder signed from Aberdeen. 16 Christian Fassnacht - Swiss international, one of Wagner's Young Boys. 10 Ashley Barnes - Ex Brighton and Burnley, always scores against us. 27 Jonathan Rowe - 20 year old winger. 9 Josh Sargent - Ex Werder Bremen, USA international. RE: Town v Norwich - Warnock v Wagner - theo_luddite - 22-08-2023 Good thread Snoots but despite what you claim to the contrary, it's Deliah's Floury Baps that have convinced them all that Norwich is the place to be. That and free goes at Tractor World. RE: Town v Norwich - Warnock v Wagner - ritchiebaby - 22-08-2023 No 3 must be Schalke. Shane Duffy - is he the thug, er, combative defender who played for Blackburn in the match I attended many years ago? I remember the Town manager had a penchant/fetish for tan shoes. Anyway, depending on my busy social diary, I think it's high time I came back to the JSS, or whatever it's called now, some time in the Spring. RE: Town v Norwich - Warnock v Wagner - Amelia Chaffinch - 23-08-2023 You'd be very welcome, Ritchie. RE: Town v Norwich - Warnock v Wagner - ritchiebaby - 24-08-2023 Going through my "liste der Deutsche fussball clubs", No 6 will be Eintracht Frankfurt. RE: Town v Norwich - Warnock v Wagner - theo_luddite - 24-08-2023 Frankfurt United indeed I've given the stadium many names, if it has another by the time you arrive ritchie, it will still be in the same place. RE: Town v Norwich - Warnock v Wagner - jjamez - 25-08-2023 1 must be Sheffield united and 7 Ronnie jepson. 2 will be Christoph buhler As for the game, expecting a defeat, Wagner has had them looking sharp so far this season and seems to have got that little bit of a glint in his eye that he had when he was here. It was always going to be difficult to imprint himself on the side last season, especially when his style of play is now fairly common place in English football, it's no longer going to be a surprise for teams when they face him. But you give him a preseason and he will get everything running like a machine RE: Town v Norwich - Warnock v Wagner - Lord Snooty - 25-08-2023 RE: Town v Norwich - Warnock v Wagner - theo_luddite - 25-08-2023 4. would appear to be Burton Albion - I had to look up Colin's links to Brewery-on-Trent. 5. Crystal Palace RE: Town v Norwich - Warnock v Wagner - Lord Snooty - 25-08-2023 Just 8, 9 and 10 to get then. |
