Leeds news - themaclad - 07-07-2023

Leeds United defender Robin Koch has joined Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt on a season-long loan.

The 26-year-old German made 77 appearances in all competitions for Leeds after joining in 2020 from Freiburg.

The Germany international's contract with Leeds will expire at the end of next season and he will become a free agent when his loan ends.

Leeds will reportedly receive a loan fee from Frankfurt.

Koch, quoted on Frankfurt's website, said: "I've matured a lot in the last three seasons at Leeds in what is perhaps the strongest league in the world - as a footballer but also as a person.

"I want to prove that again in the Bundesliga. I am convinced that we can have a strong season."

His departure comes two days after Daniel Farke was announced as Leeds' new manager on a four-year deal.

Leeds were relegated from the Premier League in 2022-23 after a campaign that saw them sack two managers, Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia, with Sam Allardyce unable to keep them up.

Leeds United centre-back Diego Llorente has rejoined Italian side Roma on a season-long loan.

The 29-year-old Spain international spent the second half of last season on loan at the Serie A club.

Llorente has made 59 appearances for Leeds since joining them for a reported £18m in 2020, but became an increasingly marginal figure.

That led to a loan to Roma in January, in which he impressed manager Jose Mourinho in his 12 appearances.

He won a Europa League runners-up medal after appearing as a substitute in Roma's penalty shootout defeat by Sevilla in May's final.

Llorente has 10 caps for Spain and is under contract at Elland Road until 2026.

Roma are also being linked with Denmark international Rasmus Kristensen, following Leeds' relegation from the Premier League.

Robin Koch has already departed the Yorkshire club, signing on loan for Eintracht Frankfurt for the season.

Leeds United have loaned United States midfielder Brenden Aaronson to German Bundesliga side Union Berlin for the 2023-24 season.

The 22-year-old joins the Champions League entrants after one goal in 40 games for Leeds, following his move from Red Bull Salzburg last season.

Aaronson will link up with USA team-mate Jordan Pefok at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei this coming season.

"A year ago, I wouldn't have believed that I would be here," Aaronson said.

"[And now to be] able to play in the Champions League with Union. I'm looking forward to the year ahead with joy and confidence and want to help us have another successful season."

Aaronson follows Frankfurt defender Robin Koch in heading for the German league on loan following Leeds' relegation to the Championship last season, while Diego Llorente has joined Italian club Roma.

Spain forward Rodrigo has left Leeds United and joined Qatari side Al Rayyan for an undisclosed fee.

The 32-year-old signed for Leeds from Valencia for £26m in 2020 and was the club's top scorer with 15 goals last season.

Al Rayyan, who play in Qatar's 12-team QNB Stars League, activated a release clause in Rodrigo's contract, which had 12 months left to run at Elland Road.

He made 97 appearances for Leeds and scored 28 goals.

Rodrigo was an unused substitute during Spain's Nations League final win against Croatia on penalties in June.

He joins United States midfielder Brenden Aaronson, and defenders Diego Llorente and Robin Koch in leaving Leeds following the club's relegation to the Championship.

Union Berlin of the Bundesliga have signed 22-year-old Aaronson, Rodrigo's Spain team-mate Llorente, 29, has rejoined Italian side Roma, and German Koch, 26, has gone to another Bundesliga side in Eintracht Frankfurt, all on season-long loans.

Leeds announced former Norwich City boss Daniel Farke as their new manager on a four-year deal last week.

Leeds United have loaned midfielder Marc Roca to Spanish La Liga club Real Betis for the 2023-24 season.

The 26-year-old scored once in 36 games for Leeds following a move from German side Bayern Munich last summer.

However, following relegation to the Championship, the former Espanyol player has opted for a return to his native Spain for the coming season.

Roca follows Rasmus Kristensen, Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Brenden Aaronson and Rodrigo in leaving on loan.

Betis finished sixth in La Liga last season, and have former Leicester and Newcastle forward Ayoze Perez in their squad.

Leeds United have signed Wales international Ethan Ampadu from Premier League side Chelsea on a four-year deal for a reported £7m fee plus add-ons.

The 22-year-old defender played just 12 games for the Blues following his move from Exeter City in July 2017.

Ampadu had loan spells with Sheffield United and German side RB Leipzig, and spent the past two seasons in Italy with Venezia and Spezia respectively.

He becomes Leeds' first summer signing under new boss Daniel Farke.

With defenders Rasmus Kristensen, Diego Llorente and Robin Koch all departing on loan for the season following Leeds' relegation to the Championship, Ampadu's arrival gives boss Farke a new option at the back - though he can also play in a holding midfield role.

Although much of his Chelsea career has been spent away from Stamford Bridge, Ampadu was involved in pre-season training with the Blues this summer.

The centre-half played 13 games for Exeter, who have earned £1.6m from his initial sale and are to receive 20% of the profit made by Chelsea as part of their tribunal agreement.

Ampadu - the son of former Arsenal, Swansea and Exeter player Kwame Ampadu - has 44 caps for the Wales national team, playing in Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.

Leeds United have confirmed the departure of Adam Forshaw from the club.

The midfielder was released when his contract expired last month, but he was invited back for pre-season training.

The midfielder arrived at Elland Road from Middlesbrough in January 2018 and made 91 appearances in all competitions. He was part of the last promotion-winning team under Marcelo Bielsa, although he missed much of the campaign with a hip injury.

Following knee, hip and ankle problems, Forshaw returned to the side last season and made 14 appearances towards the end of the campaign.

After announcing his exit, a club statement said: "Not only has Adam been an important player over the years, but he has also been a leader behind the scenes, who has always gone above and beyond for the club and community.

"Everyone at Leeds United wishes Adam, Yasmin, Luca and Rheo all the best for the future, they will always be welcome at Elland Road."

Leeds have signed goalkeeper Karl Darlow from Newcastle on a three-year deal until 2026.

The 32-year-old arrives at Elland Road for an undisclosed fee after nine years on the books at St James' Park.

The Englishman made more 100 appearances for the club after joining from Nottingham Forest in 2014.

Yet with game time limited in the North East, Darlow joined Championship rivals Hull last season and kept five clean sheets in a 12-match loan.

Darlow follows Wales defender Ethan Ampadu in signing for Daniel Farke's side this summer.

Borussia Monchengladbach have signed Leeds United defender Max Wober on a season-long loan deal.

The 25-year-old Austria international joined the Whites in January from Red Bull Salzburg and made 16 league appearances as they were relegated from the Premier League on the final day.

He has now joined the club who Leeds boss Daniel Farke guided to 10th in the Bundesliga in 2022-23.

Leeds start the Championship season at home to Cardiff on Sunday, 6 August.

Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell has signed a new four-year deal.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan in the Championship with Millwall and scored five goals in 28 league appearances.

The son of former Preston, Stoke and Sheffield United striker Richard Cresswell, he was part of England's winning squad at the European Under-21 Championship in the summer.

Leeds start the new season with a home game against Cardiff on Sunday.
