Stockport County have released Phil Bardsley, Jacob Davenport, Chris Hussey and Ryan Johnson following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.

Johnson, 26, made 55 appearances for the club and helped them to win the National League title in 2021-22.

Former Manchester United, Sunderland, Stoke and Burnley defender Bardsley made just three appearances after joining on a free transfer in December.

The 37-year-old had donated his salary to the club's community trust.

Hussey joined in September on a deal until the end of the season, following his release by Port Vale, while Davenport joined in February having left Lincoln.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe has triggered a one-year extension - the 35-year-old has made more than 300 appearances for Stockport.

Neill Byrne and Bobby Jones have been offered new deals by the Hatters following their League Two play-off final defeat by Carlisle at the weekend.

"Collectively, we took ourselves very close to a historic second successive promotion. It wasn't to be, but there will be achievements, memories and friendships that outlast this season," director of football Simon Wilson said.

Stockport County defender Neill Byrne has signed a new two-year deal.

The 30-year-old joined the Hatters on a short-term deal from Tranmere Rovers in January.

Byrne made 21 appearances as the Edgeley Park side made the League Two play-off final.

"He has turned down a number of other offers to stay here, and we are delighted to have him," director of football Simon Wilson told the club website.

Stockport County have agreed a deal to sign Salford City captain Ibou Touray on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old defender has signed a two-year deal at Edgeley Park and will join on 1 July after his Salford contract expires.

Touray is Stockport's first signing of the summer and joins after making a total of 272 appearances for Salford over a six-year spell with the club.

Stockport manager Dave Challinor called Touray a "fantastic addition".

A product of Everton's academy, the left-back arrived at Salford from non-league Nantwich in 2017 and is a Gambia international.

Touray played in the Salford side which was beaten on penalties by Stockport in the League Two play-off semi-final last season - with the Hatters then beaten in the final by Carlisle.

Stockport County have signed forward Billy Chadwick on one-year contract on a free transfer from Hull City.

The 23-year-old leaves his hometown club to join the Hatters, with the option of a further year on his deal.

Chadwick made a total of nine first-team appearances for Championship club Hull and spent time on loan at National League North side Boston last term.

"We believe he has potential to kick on and we have a developmental plan for him," said boss Dave Challinor.

"We all feel he's younger than his years if you like, as he's had a bad time with injury over the past few years.

"He's shown signs of getting back to himself in a recent loan and this opportunity hopefully gives him the platform to get back to his pre-injury level, have an impact on our first-team squad, and become a win-win for everyone."

Head coach Dave Challinor has signed a new three-year deal with Stockport County, following last season's run to the League Two play-off final.

Challinor has overseen a rise since taking over at Edgeley Park in November 2021, first guiding the Hatters to promotion from the National League.

They were within a penalty shootout of back-to-back successes, but lost to Carlisle United at Wembley.

"We've had some success," Challinor told the club website.

"There's still the overriding disappointment of the end of last year, but in terms of where I am and where the club are, we're aligned in what we want to try and achieve over the next few years.

"To extend my stay is something both parties wanted to do, so happy to get it done."

The 47-year-old, who also took Hartlepool into the English Football League the season before taking up his current role, has won 56 wins in 97 games at Stockport.

He did have a year remaining on his existing deal but has now agreed new terms to run until the summer of 2026.

Director of football Simon Wilson added: "We believe strongly in the direction we are going under Dave's leadership and I think he believes strongly that we will deliver the support required to enable success moving forward.

"He has grown during his time with the club and will continue to evolve here. It won't all be plain sailing as it never is but there is an underlying level of trust on both sides to come through the challenges and continue to move the club forward."

Meanwhile, striker Jack Stretton will miss the majority of the forthcoming League Two season after he sustained an anterior cruciate ligament knee injury in training.

The 21-year-old joined the Hatters from Derby County in January and scored three goals in 19 games between then and the end of the season.

Stockport County have signed former Manchester United and Stoke City forward Nick Powell on a free transfer following his release from the Potters.

The 29-year-old scored 27 goals for Stoke and made 119 appearances after joining from Wigan Athletic in 2019.

He joins the Hatters on a three-year deal having made 26 appearances for Stoke City during the 2022-23 season.

"I'm really happy to be here and to be a part of what's happening at County right now," Powell said.

"I think everyone can see what an exciting journey the club is on, the ambitions that the owner has for the club, and that was something that really appealed to me when deciding on my next move.

"The boys came so close to promotion last season, we all know the aim is to take that next step this time round and be a League One club, which is where a club the size of County belong - hopefully I can play my part in making that a reality."

Stockport have signed Aberdeen defender Jayden Richardson on a season-long loan deal.

The 22-year-old joined the Dons from Nottingham Forest last summer and made 19 league appearances in 2022-23.

"I'm absolutely delighted to get a deal sorted for Jayden to join us," boss Dave Challinor told the club website.

"This one's been a long time in planning as he was someone who we discussed and tried to move on last season."

Stockport County have signed England youth international Louie Barry from Aston Villa on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old spent a decade in the academy at West Bromwich Albion before joining the Barcelona youth set-up in July 2019.

Six months later he moved to Villa, where he scored on his senior debut in the 4-1 defeat by Liverpool in a FA Cup third-round tie in January 2021.

Barry has also been on loan at Ipswich, Swindon, MK Dons and Salford.

He spent the second half of last term with the Ammies, scoring twice in 21 appearances, as the club reached the semi-finals of the League Two play-offs where they lost to Stockport on penalties.

The Hatters say they beat "numerous" other clubs to sign Barry, who signed a new contract at Villa Park before securing his loan move.

"We've had to be really patient, but that's been rewarded by Louie now being at the club," Stockport first team manager Dave Challinor said.

"He was our top target in his position, and for him and Aston Villa to choose us as his next destination is really pleasing."

Barry is Stockport's second signing in the last 24 hours following the arrival of Aberdeen loanee Jayden Richardson.

League Two side Stockport County have signed Swansea City midfielder Joel Cotterill on a season-long loan.

The 18-year-old was the Swans' academy player of the year last season and signed a three-year deal this summer.

The Wales under-21 international made his senior debut 12 months ago in the Carabao Cup tie with Oxford United.

"Joel is a dynamic, ball-playing midfielder that can play in a number of positions," said Stockport director of football, Simon Wilson.

"In the context of the new rules, with longer games and more disciplinary action, we anticipate needing to use the full squad this season and I am sure he is going to make a meaningful impact."

Stockport have signed defender Alfie Pond on a season-long loan from Wolves.

The 19-year-old moved to Molineux from Exeter last September and made his first-team debut on Tuesday in the EFL Cup win over Blackpool.

County need cover at the back after Neill Byrne was ruled out for around three months by a knee injury.

"Alfie has a really bright future ahead of him. I am really looking forward to working with him," Hatters boss Dave Challinor told the club website.

Pond is the second arrival this week after Joel Cotterill's signing from Swansea on Monday and Challinor said: "It's a position we needed to strengthen due to injury, but to be able to get someone of his quality, pedigree and potential shows the regard in which the club is held in terms of developing players and us being trusted with them - similar to Joel's loan.

"Alfie can play in any of the centre-back positions, be that in a three or a two, is strong aerially and comfortable with the ball at his feet."

Pond came through the ranks at Exeter after joining the Grecians aged six before earning a five-year deal at Premier League Wolves.
