Tranmere Rovers have signed defender Ben Hockenhull on a two-year deal ahead of the 2022-23 League Two season.

The 20-year-old came through the youth ranks at Manchester United before joining Brentford in summer 2020.

"I've seen in the past how young players have developed and improved so I want to do the same," he said.

"I want to keep building and become better. I'm a ball-playing centre-half and I want to play in front of big crowds which is something I can do."

Tranmere Rovers have re-signed midfielder Paul Lewis from Northampton Town on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old, who was contracted at the Cobblers for next season, has left the League Two club almost a year after joining them from Rovers.

He played 43 times for Northampton, scoring seven goals and returns to Prenton Park where he spent 12 months after moving from Cambridge United.

"I can't wait to get back out there and get going again," Lewis said.

"I believe that Tranmere are always going to be at the top end of the table so that was a big factor in me coming back. I really enjoyed it last time I was here."

Lewis helped Northampton to a fourth-placed finish in League Two this season - they missed out on automatic promotion on a dramatic final day when the Cobblers were leapfrogged by Bristol Rovers after they won 7-0 at relegated Scunthorpe United.

"I know he really enjoyed his time with us but his family circumstances mean he wants to move back north and we certainly didn't want to stand in his way," Northampton manager Jon Brady said.

"It suits all involved for this to happen, we part on good terms and wish Paul well for the future."

Tranmere Rovers boss Micky Mellon told the club website: "He's a player who can do both sides of the game with his work rate as well as his goal contributions from midfield.

"I didn't get to work with him when he was last at the club but he was a player that was always on our radar before he joined and I'm really pleased that he will be part of the group going forward.

Tranmere Rovers have signed former Norwich City midfielder Reece McAlear on a two-year contract.

The 20-year-old's contract at the Canaries ended this summer, with just one brief first-team appearance to his name in November 2020.

He spent last season on loan at Scottish Championship side Inverness Caledonian Thistle, where he scored six goals in 43 appearances.

He moved to Norwich for an undisclosed fee from Motherwell in 2019.

"He is an exciting young midfielder who we see potential and quality in," Rovers boss Mickey Mellon told the club website.

"Reece has a good pedigree after joining Norwich at a young age, playing for Scotland at youth level and also having a good season with Inverness last season.

"He is still only 20 so we're excited to add his qualities to the group as well as working with him to get the most out of him."

Tranmere Rovers have signed defender Ethan Bristow on a two-year contract following his release by Reading at the end of the season.

The 20-year-old, who predominantly plays left-back, made 11 senior appearances for the Royals after progressing through a scholarship.

Bristow played eight games last season but none after Paul Ince's appointment as interim manager in February.

"As soon as I heard of the interest I was keen to come," Bristow said.

"I did some research. The stadium, the training ground and particularly playing in front of the fans excites me.

"I'm very attacking, I'm agile and I like to use my pace to get past players so being able to get up and down the pitch is my strongest attribute."

The League Two side's manager Micky Mellon added: "He's got experience of playing in the Championship and we're really looking forward to working with him and seeing him progress. He's a player with lots of energy."

Tranmere Rovers have signed free agent midfielder Jon Nolan on a one-year-deal, following his release by Bristol Rovers at the end of last season.

The 30-year-old joined the Gas midway through the season following his departure from Ipswich, but a calf injury limited him to one appearance.

Liverpool-born Nolan has scored 34 goals in 327 senior games for eight clubs, including Lincoln and Stockport.

"I'm happy to get the deal over the line," Nolan told the Tranmere website.

"It's been a long off-season for me and I've worked to get to this position fitness wise so I'm happy to get it sorted.

"I've been in training for a week or two to see how it was and I was happy to be here as soon as I came. It's a massive club, the facilities here are top notch and I couldn't ask for any more really."

Tranmere Rovers have re-signed goalkeeper Ross Doohan on a two-year deal from Scottish champions Celtic, for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old did not make a senior appearance while with Celtic, but has first-team experience from loans at Ayr, Dundee United and Ross County.

Doohan conceded 37 goals in 34 appearances for Tranmere last term and kept 14 clean sheets.

"I'm really pleased to get it all sorted now," Doohan said.

"I know how the club works and the stature of it with the training facilities, the stadium and the fan base. Having a great relationship with the gaffer [Micky Mellon] and with Joe Murphy was another big factor for me."

Tranmere Rovers have signed free agent defender Kyle Jameson on a one-year contract, following his end-of-season exit from Oldham Athletic.

The Urmston-born defender played 15 games across all competitions last season, having amassed two goals in 42 games in total with the Latics.

Jameson, 23, was at Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion earlier in his career, and had loan stays at Barrow and Fylde.

"We're looking forward to working with Kyle," boss Micky Mellon said.

Tranmere Rovers have signed Wigan Athletic defender Luke Robinson on a season-long loan deal.

The 20-year-old extended his deal with the Latics until the end of the 2023-24 season on Wednesday.

"I think this has been a long time coming and is the right time for me to go out and get first-team football," he told the club website.

"It's my hometown club, it's what everyone dreams about being able to play for their local club."

RE: New Mellons - themaclad - 27-07-2022

Tranmere Rovers have signed former Salford City defender Jordan Turnbull on a two-year deal.

The 27-year-old was a free agent after turning down a new deal with the Ammies at the end of last season.

"We're really pleased to complete the signing of Jordan and we can't wait to start working with him," boss Micky Mellon told the club website.

"He's played to a very good standard and achieved promotion from this level so he knows what it takes."

ranmere Rovers have signed former Burnley striker Joel Mumbongo on a one-year deal.

The 23-year-old, who spent time on loan in League One with Accrington in 2021-22, was released by the Clarets at the end of last season.

He could make his debut in Saturday's League Two opener against Stevenage.

"He's been with us for a couple of weeks now so we can see his qualities and what he can bring," boss Micky Mellon told the club website.
