Though Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama supply centuries in pushing Sri Lanka to a decent 344-9, it's just not enough in Hyderabad; Abdullah Shafique and Mohammed Rizwan get tons of their own as Pakistan surpass Ireland's 329 back in 2011 to achieve a new World Cup record chase.

Week One Roundup

Few surprises from the first ten days of the tournament as New Zealand and India emerge as early frontrunners, while Pakistan stumble in their big showdown and England regroup following their opening-day spanking. Australia are winless after a record World Cup defeat against dark horses South Africa, and they'll have to look to get off the mark this coming week.

Leading Run-Scorers

1. Mohammad Rizwan (PAK) - 248
2. Devon Conway (NZ) - 229
3. Rohit Sharma (IND) - 217
4. Quinton de Kock (SA) - 209
5. Kusal Mendis (SRI) - 198

Leading Wicket-Takers

1. Jasprit Bumrah (IND) - 8 [for 93]
2. Mitchell Santner (NZ) - 8 [for 127]
3. Matt Henry (NZ) - 8 [for 146]
4. Hasan Ali (PAK) - 7
5. Kagiso Rabada (SA) - 5 [for 83]

Afghanistan post 284 in Delhi; even in the innings break I feared it was a defendable score. Sure enough, England are 132-5 at the halfway mark, we now need Brook and Curran to dig us out of a massive hole. If Afghanistan pull it off it'll be not only their first ODI win against England, but their first against any of the Big Six, and could well surpass their three Test wins to date as the greatest moment of their cricketing history.

Well I reckon this is the best England squad ever. Better than the team that won it last time.

Pardon? What did you say? Lost to Afghanistan?

Oh fer fex ache! Blush

Fair play to Afghanistan, they had their moments in their first couple of games and were always going to add to their World Cup scalps at some point in this tournament, but England have only themselves to blame for it happening today.

And it's on! After recovering from 82-5 and 140-7 to post 245-8, the Netherlands have blown away South Africa's top order with the new ball to leave them 44-4! If they pull off the upset it'll dwarf what Afghanistan did on Sunday.

89-5! South Africa need 157 from 24 overs.

While there's precedent in the Dutch beating the Proteas during last year's T20 World Cup, their biggest ODI triumph to date is beating Bangladesh a dozen years ago. History in the making if they can pull this off.

South Africa in essentially the same position Netherlands were at the same point in the innings. Need either Miller or Jansen to stick around and play the kind of knock Scott Edwards did to rescue the Dutch.

Ooh, David Miller dropped on 23 by Bas de Leede, and the ball goes for four to boot. Could be costly.

Van Meekeren bowls Jansen for 9, South Africa 109-6! All on Miller to go the distance now.

Logan van Beek bowls Miller for 43, South Africa 145-7 and need 101 more from 72 balls. Calling it now, the Netherlands have got this and it's not even going to be close.

147-8, Scott Edwards takes a steepler to remove Gerald Coetzee. Start the car.

Maharaj and Rabada going down swinging, they don't really have much choice. 166-8, 80 more needed from 48.

And Rabada's a goner. 166-9, who's going to polish it off and have their picture in the history books?

Somewhat anti-climactically, it looks like South Africa want to bat out the overs and the Netherlands want to let them. Twelve balls to go.

There it is! Maharaj is caught behind for 40 off the penultimate ball, Van Beek takes the historic wicket! Echte mannen dragen Oranje!

Entertaining game had a laugh at Bavuma the look on his face when one of the last batsman hit one of his pace bowlers for a mammoth six

RE: ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 - themaclad - 21-10-2023

Apparently they could have made a mistake putting South Africa in, no shit Sherlock!!! chances of qualifying hand by a very thin thread

RE: ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 - Lord Snooty - 21-10-2023

It's definitely a mistake for our lot to bowl first. Watched a bit of it this morning and the bowlers just aren't good enough. Better to get in first and get a decent score on board.
