Reason for that is that I don't think it matters who the captain is.

In professional football, I'm a firm believer than players should be self motivated and leaders will talk and communicate with younger players, with or without the armband.

Lescott will be respected for his top level experience and quality and the younger pros should listen to him if they've got their heads screwed on, regardless of the armband.

Stripping a player on captaincy doesn't send a great message, especially if he's liked in the dressing room and can cause more problems than it's worth. I'm sure the likes of Lescott can lead the team anyway.

...BUT, importantly, IMO you DO need a designated captain to gee people up; to organise, encourage/give a bollocking/pep talk as necessary through a game. At the present time if JL is doing this OVER the designated captain it could give problems where players could start to resent what's being said. or not listen, take sides, etc..
Furthermore, I think the statement 'stripping a player of the captaincy' is a bit over dramatic (a la Sun/Mirror) - I'd class it as giving the captaincy to a more appropriate person for the good of the team.

I'd agree that players SHOULD all be well motivated but still think that a captain - who SHOULD be a motivator and a leader - is still an important and necessary role.
Lescott for me! I still think Brunty has a lot to offer as a player but isn't either of the above  Confused

Agree with Drewks, especially when the going gets tough, you need someone who's going to encourage you, motivate you and ultimately make sure you're giving your all. You don't just see this on the football pitch, you can also see it in everyday jobs in the form of team leaders, supervisors, etc...

I still remember the leadership which was frequently shown by Paul Scharner at a time when Scott Carson was technically our captain. Still grateful for it, too.

...... agree, but maybe that was an extreme example tho Ska'd - IMO Carson as captain was an incredibly strange appointment - many degrees up on the 'odd' scale than Brunty; SOMEONE had to take charge in those circumstances! Whistle

The difference he makes to the solidarity of the back four and the team in general poses the question, should the captaincy be given over to Jo?

Brunt may have upped his game since the Everton debacle but, he is not a natural leader of men and allows his chin to drop and moans if things do not go right. Lescott cajoles his team mates and talks them through the game. You could even hear him in Row 44 BRE !

No place for Mr Olsson while this guy is around and fit,fit being the opperative word.I think we need to nurse him along much in the same way as ManU and Villa did with Magrath

Wonder what our two first choice CB's of last season are thinking. Certainly not in the frame now.

If this continues could Jonas angle for a move in January?

I agree, while thes two (Lescott and Dawson) are fit to play cannot see Olsson getting a look in.

RE: Captain Lescott - WBA Will - 30-09-2014

I don't see the logic of stripping Brunt of the captaincy. The captain of the club does far more than just motivate on the pitch, he should be a major link between the players and 'the powers that be'. We don't see any of the behind the scenes work that Brunt does but the players are clearly happy with it, which is why successive coaches have stuck with him as captain. Motivating on the pitch is only one aspect of it, clearly Brunt has been doing something right! I read this recently about John Terry (I know, hardly a barometer of morality and decency, but still a good captain), and it shows how big an influence the captain can be throughout the club: http://www.whoateallthepies.tv/chelsea/109807/former-chelsea-youth-players-candid-account-reveals-another-less-gimpish-side-to-john-terry.html . I don't think someone who has been at the club for only a couple of months could have that kind of influence. Stick with Brunt and let Lescott be a natural leader without needing the armband. Any club needs a few leaders on the pitch anyway.

As a side note, I was very pleased and relieved by the reaction that Brunt got on Sunday. The crowd against Everton were disgusting towards him so it was good to see the supporters actually being supporting.
