Have they confirmed that to be the plan? Madness if so; you need to promote the champions at least, because otherwise what's the point? But Division One would be carnage anyway, with at least four teams set to go down, or potentially the entire bottom half of the league if they allowed a team to come up from Division Two.

They need 12 of the 18 counties to agree to the proposal, and it's clearly not going to pass in its current form. My fear is that Strauss and the ECB have formulated this plan as an aggressive opening gambit, betting that if they make concessions on the T20 Blast (i.e. allow it to retain a 14-match group stage), enough counties will see the £££ signs before their eyes and agree to the red-ball changes without modification or compromise.

Yorkshire given a warm welcome to Division Two cricket by Leicestershire in an absolute corker at Headingley this weekend! Yorks batted first and made 517, Leics replied with 415. Yorks declared on 268-6 this morning, setting 389 to win off eighty-something overs, and after losing 7 wickets in the chase, Leics (who haven't won a red-ball match since September 2021) crossed the line with eight balls to spare thanks to a fantastic partnership from Peter Handscomb (68*) and Chris Wright (40*).

Leicestershire's last victory at Headingley was in August 1910. A great and historic day for an ailing county.

Surrey were just one run short of the century-old all-time Championship record chase, and had been bowled out for 145 first innings. This week's been the ultimate illustration of why we need red-ball county cricket in June (and, indeed, every month of the summer).
