England on tour, 2023-24
#21
England won the toss and batted in Ranchi, and after being 112-5 at lunch on a lively pitch with variable bounce, there are signs that the last week's criticism has been heeded as Root makes a classy century, his slowest since Stokes took over as captain, with nothing but proper cricket shots on display. Good support from Foakes and then Robinson, 302-7 at close; obviously a lot depends on how the pitch plays from here, but it looks like England's day, and 350 could prove a competitive score.

Enthralling stuff in Ranchi: a half-century from Robbo lifted England to 353 all out (though the last three wickets fell for 6 runs, and they could probably have got up near 400); India batted well against the new ball, Jaiswal looked well set, but then Hartley and Bashir ripped them to shreds either side of tea. The pitch has plenty to offer, but when partnerships get going they can prove stubborn, and Dhruv Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav have played a great rearguard to shepherd India to close on 219-7.

Ugh. Twenty-four hours of being comprehensively out-batted and out-bowled. Game's gone barring a morning miracle tomorrow.

Made them work for it but it was a case of if you got in on that wicket it was hard to get them out

The big moment was when Jurel lost his patience with about 50 still needed, tried to swipe Hartley over mid-on and lofted an edge up in the air which Bashir couldn't quite get to. If that had gone to hand, game on. Not to be, sadly.

Always nice to see snow forecast the week of a Test Laugh

Bet you remember the Derbyshire vs Lancs match stopped by snow at Buxton in June '75?

Yep massive Clive Lloyd century on the Saturday made well over 400, Derby 80 ish and 40ish all out Ashley Harvey-Walker was that worried about the wicket he batted without his false teeth in.
Ashley was one of the many though which tends to happen to crickters sadly took his own life years later
