St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright has signed highly-rated Spartans striker George Hunter, despite competition from Hearts, Hibernian and Rangers.

The 18-year-old has signed on at McDiarmid Park after impressing Wright during a weeks's trial at the club.

Hunter attracted attention after scoring 34 goals in 14 matches for Spartans' under-20s.

"He has real composure which allows him to score all types of goals," said Spartans boss Dougie Samuel.

And the Lowland League side's manager added: "George has demonstrated a fantastic work ethic and desire to improve, to be the best he can be. He has earned this wonderful opportunity and we all wish him well."

I imagine the leap from Highland league to the Premiership is quite a big one but its good to see teams taking a punt on these youngsters. If it works then they will sell him later for a decent fee, if it doesn't it won't have cost them a fortune and he will drop down the league again. Either way bringing him into a full time Premiership set up should dramatically improve him as a player.
